Who We Are

Mission

The Church of the Ascension exists for people to encounter God in the beauty of the Adirondack north woods through sacrament and music, the fellowship of summer community in the power of the Holy Spirit, and the Word revealed to us in Jesus.

Vision

The Church of the Ascension is a place where we encounter God in a way that is characterized by curiosity, openness, joy, and wonder.  We are grounded in a traditional pattern of worship rooted in the Book of Common Prayer, and, echoing the opening stanza of Psalm 121, we lift our eyes upward and outward toward the mountains, waterways, and communities that surround us.  Our church is a seasonal pilgrimage site, and we aspire to be a point of intersection and connection in the greater Upper Saranac Lake community.

What We Believe

As an interdenominational Christian community, the Church of the Ascension treasures the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds and uses them often to ground our worship, especially on First Sundays when we gather at the Lord’s table for Holy Communion. We center ourselves in the life and person of Jesus and seek to be open to persons of all faith traditions. Like Abraham and Sarah, our ancestors through faith, we inhabit a tent “open on all four sides" (cf. Gen 18:1-5), receptive to truth wherever it may be found. We teach and strive to live by Jesus' mandate to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself” (Lk. 10:28), and to love others as Jesus loves us (cf. Jn. 13:34).

Welcome, Neighbor!
