Who We Are
The Church of the Ascension exists for people to encounter God in the beauty of the Adirondack north woods through sacrament and music, the fellowship of summer community in the power of the Holy Spirit, and the Word revealed to us in Jesus.
After the tough winters of the north woods, the season between July 4th and Labor Day is full of light and life in the Adirondacks. The long summer days and the natural beauty of Upper Saranac Lake feed our bodies and minds, and the Church of the Ascension provides us with food to feed our souls. True to its name, the Church of the Ascension is a space where we meet Jesus on the mountaintop (Mark 9:2-8). Here is a space where you can abide in God’s grace and find redemption in a broken world. For some it's a respite on holiday. For others, it provides a moment of rest from the daily tasks of living in the north woods. Come and see how this little log church provides us with a lens through which everything sparkles with God’s love. Whether you are a year-round resident looking for a new lease on life or a summer visitor, come and see Jesus on the mountaintop with us.
What We Believe
As an interdenominational Christian community, the Church of the Ascension treasures the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds and uses them often to ground our worship, especially on First Sundays when we gather at the Lord’s table for Holy Communion. We center ourselves in the life and person of Jesus and seek to be open to persons of all faith traditions. Like Abraham and Sarah, our ancestors through faith, we inhabit a tent “open on all four sides" (cf. Gen 18:1-5), open to truth wherever it may be found. We teach and strive to live by Jesus' mandate to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself” (Lk. 10:28), and to love others and Jesus loves us (cf. Jn. 13:34).
